NCRHA Matchups of the Week - February 18-19, 2023 - The Results!

 February 23rd, 2023 at 2:39PM  February 23rd, 2023 8:42PM

We’ve wrapped up the regular season, all except one outlying game between Colorado and Sam Houston State, to be played this Saturday at 4pm Central. Last weekend’s Matchups of the Week Results are below!

NCRHA Division I Matchup of the Week

Arizona State University vs. Grand Canyon University

Saturday, February 18 – 9pm

Season Head to Head prior to this weekend: Arizona State leads season series 3-1

Season Head to Head after this weekend: Arizona State leads season series 4-1, with 6-4 win on Feb. 18

Arizona State Final Regular Season Record: 15 wins, 1 loss (1st in WCRHL DI)

Grand Canyon Final Regular Season Record: 12 wins, 4 losses (2nd in WCRHL DI)

Another great game between the WCRHL’s top teams, Arizona State and Grand Canyon. ASU’s Matt Cornish led the way with 3 goals on the game, including the first goal of the game just 56 seconds in and the eventual game-winner early in the 3rd period. Intense game with a few power play opportunities for each side. Grand Canyon capitalized on 2 of those power plays. Both goaltenders were solid throughout the game

The teams will play a best-of-3 series at WCRHL Conference Championships on March 4, at Corona Inline in Corona, CA. The event schedule can be found here: https://wcrhl.com/event/_/2178?event_id=2178&playoff_id=1261&area=composite

NCRHA Division II Matchup of the Week

University of Massachusetts vs. Penn State University

Saturday, February 18 – 10pm

Season Head to Head prior to this weekend: UMass leads season series 1-0, with 10-5 on Nov. 20

Season Head to Head after this weekend: UMass leads season series 2-0, with 5-3 win on Feb. 18

UMass Season Final Regular Season Record: 9 wins, 6 losses, 1 overtime loss (tied for 2nd in ECRHA DII)

Penn State Final Regular Season Record: 6 wins, 6 losses, 4 overtime losses (4th in ECRHA DII)

Another great game between these 2 longstanding ECRHA teams, this time a more controlled game with about half the scoring of their previous matchup. Penn State scored first and exited the 1st period ahead 2-1, but 4 straight UMass goals in the 2nd period stole the game away. UMass’ Collin Cooke scored the game-winner late in the 2nd.

Both teams will be competing at the ECRHA Conference Championships on March 3-5, at Marple Sports Arena in Broomall, PA. The event schedule can be found here: https://ecrha.net/event/_/2165?event_id=2165&playoff_id=1255&area=composite

NCRHA Division III Matchup of the Week

Quinnipiac University vs. Hofstra University

Saturday, February 18 – 7pm

Season Head to Head prior to this weekend: Hofstra leads season series 1-0, with 8-6 win on November 19

Season Head to Head after this weekend: Season series tied 1 game to 1, with Quinnipiac 8-7 overtime win on Feb. 18

Quinnipiac Final Regular Season Record: 13 wins, 3 losses, 1 overtime loss (tied for 2nd in ECRHA DIII)

Hofstra Final Regular Season Record: 11 wins, 4 losses, 1 overtime loss (tied for 4th in ECRHA DIII)

Wow, this was a great game last weekend. Quinnipiac came in ready to avenge the loss from November. Both teams only had 2 games on the weekend to complete their final regular season play, so both were well rested and ready to fight it out. Hofstra struck first, 3 times actually, going up 3-0 in the first half of the 1st period. Quinnipiac would add 3 goals in the 1st and Hofstra 1 more, making it 4-3 in Hofstra’s favor at the end of the 1st. In the 2nd it was Quinnipiac getting 3 to Hofstra’s 1, and vice versa in the 3rd with Hofstra scoring 2 to Quinnipiac’s 2, making it 7-7 and headed for overtime. In OT, it was Quinnipiac’s Vinson Guigliano almost 3 minutes into the 4 minute overtime getting the game-winner.

Both teams will be competing at the ECRHA Conference Championships on March 3-5, at Marple Sports Arena in Broomall, PA. The event schedule can be found here: https://ecrha.net/event/_/2165?event_id=2165&playoff_id=1255&area=composite

The 3 WCRHL AA teams fought it out this past weekend in Corona, CA, playing each of their divisional rivals plus a smattering of opponents from other divisions. It was not just playoff positioning on the line, but playoff qualification, in that the top 2 AA teams would go on to the WCRHL Conference Championships in 2 weeks. Arizona State continued their strong AA Division play with 2 wins, while University of Arizona split their games, and CSU Fullerton went 0-2. This would end the regular season for the CSU Fullerton Titans, and Arizona State will face University of Arizona in a best-of-3 series at the WCRHL Conference Championships March 4, 2023 at Corona Inline in Corona, CA. NCRHA Cross-Divisional Matchup of the Week

Henry Ford College (JC) vs. The Ohio State University (DII)

Saturday, February 18 – 6pm

Season Head to Head prior to this weekend: Henry Ford leads season series 3-0

Season Head to Head after this weekend: Henry Ford leads season series 4-0, with 7-6 overtime win on Feb. 18

Henry Ford Season Standings: 10 wins, 6 losses, 1 overtime loss

Ohio State Season Standings: 10 wins, 7 losses, 1 overtime loss (1st in MCRHL DII)

Great game between these 2 teams, the closest game all season. Both are hitting their strides at the right time, heading into the post-season. Ohio State jumped out to a 3-0 lead halfway through the 1st and then Henry Ford answered right back with 3 goals late in the 1st, taking a 3-3 tie into the 1st intermission. In periods 2 and 3, the teams traded goals again, heading for overtime at 7 a piece. 3:32 into the 4 minute overtime, Henry Ford’s Dustin Foran would complete the hat trick for the win.

The teams will face each other, as well as Michigan State, in the MCRHL Eastern Finals on March 4, 2023 at Fraser Roller Hockey in Fraser, MI. The event schedule can be found here: https://mcrhl.com/event/_/2187?event_id=2187&playoff_id=1259&area=composite
